Teaching Freely with Reading Ladders

How do we teach reading?

Reading for enjoyment seems to have taken a turn in todays reading classes. As educators, it is our duty to bring enjoyment of reading back into the classroom. By using book clubs, we are attempting to give some of the choice back to the students through genre selection as well as book selection.

Our Unit Proposal

This website is meant to be a proposal for educators on how to provide students with exciting new ways in which to read in the classroom. Our usage of reading ladders combines with book clubs to give students a new way to challenge their reading levels. Book clubs allow students to work together, as well as help each other creating a sense of teamwork inside the classroom. We have developed an example reading ladder which focusses on a theme of heroism in young adult literature. We have provided a list of common core standards that support a usage of book clubs from 7th-12th grade. We also have some proposals for in class activities as well as potential summative assessments that could be used in creating a book club within a classroom.
