Characterization with Dating Profiles

This activity is meant to be for a book with a romantic plot, but it can be adapted to fit any type of novel. Students will be handed two or three copies of this worksheet. As a group, students will find characteristics of two or three characters and create a dating profile for them. The details will be pulled from the description that we get from the different characters in the novel.

Role Play Activity

For this activity, students will get to choose a character to portray in a role playing activity. Ask students to create a group chat on their phones before the start of the activity. Instruct students to change each others names on their contact list briefly for the sake of this activity. Give students a select amount of time and ask them to communicate with each other acting as the character they chose through text. At the end of the activity, have students reflect on how their experience went. How did they act in the group chat and why? Did they act as a foil to another character to create conflict? How does what they said relate to their character in the novel?

Read Aloud

Ask students to meet in their groups and participate in a read aloud. Students will take turns reading a chapter or two out loud utilizing expression during their reading. Ask students to then reflect on their read aloud. How did it go? Did you find reading with expression to make understanding the tone of the text easier? Would you want to do this activity again? Why or why not?

Vocabulary Sheet

Ask students at the end of the previous class to complete a vocab sheet as they are reading their assigned sections for homework. Ask students to look for words that they are either unfamiliar with or have the potential to change the way the text is interpreted.

During the next class, have students form in their book club groups. Ask students to discuss their vocabulary words and why they chose those words.

At the end of the activity, have students reflect on the group discussion as a possible exit ticket. Were there similarities to the words discussed in your group? Did members of your group choose words they didn't know or words they thought were important in understanding the context of the text?
